About FeverDots®

SBA Certified Women Owned Small Business

What are FeverDots?

FeverDots are continuous temperature monitoring stickers that change color when the surface temperature increases. When worn on the forehead it provides an early alert visible for others to see.

The FeverDot consists of a black thermochromic coating over a sticker substrate. The color remains black on cooler surfaces and turns to purple and then to bright pink as temperature increases.

Forehead temperature is generally a degree cooler than core body temperature. For most people normal forehead temperature is 97°F. However, when the internal body temperature rises, so does the forehead surface temperature.

Color can be measured by its red, green, blue value. Black has low color values and pink has high red value.  The color of an activated FeverDot begins as black or purple, but quickly takes on increasing red tones as its temperature rises. At 99°F the activated FeverDot is bright pink, as indicated by the high red values in the graph.

Temperature Monitoring Capabilities

Differentiators

  •  Non-Invasive Temperature Monitoring: FeverDots® minimize discomfort and reduces the need for frequent temperature checks, allowing caregivers, teachers, parents, and emergency responders to monitor temperatures passively.
  • Visual Temperature Indicator: FeverDots® change color to signal fever, offering a clear, immediate indication without specialized training. This feature benefits schools and disaster relief shelters, as well as parents at home who want a quick, effective way to monitor children’s fevers.
  • Complementary Use with Thermometers: FeverDots® act as an early warning system, encouraging further temperature verification if a fever is detected.
  • Ease of Use and Application: Simple to apply and suitable for long-term wear, FeverDots® provide continuous fever screening without invasive procedures or additional technology, making it ideal for quick deployment in homes, schools, and emergency settings.
  • Enhanced Safety Protocols: FeverDots® allow for rapid identification of potential health concerns, helping to prevent the spread of illness in high-traffic areas and providing peace of mind to parents monitoring their children's health at home. We take a personalized and evidence-based approach to wellness, utilizing the latest research and techniques to help our clients achieve their health goals.

FeverDots for schools, elders, seniors and health or medical centers

Key Applications

  1. Assisted Living Facilities: Enables continuous, non-invasive monitoring for elderly residents, reducing agitation and supporting timely responses.
  2. Schools: Provides a rapid screening tool for teachers and staff to identify fevers among students, helping to prevent outbreaks and manage health concerns quickly and discreetly.
  3. Disaster Relief and Emergency Shelters: In disaster-affected areas, FeverDots® offer a low-cost, easily deployable solution for identifying fevers among large groups, helping responders manage potential health risks in challenging conditions.
  4. Home Use for Parents: FeverDots® is easy for parents to use at home to monitor their children’s temperatures without frequent disruptions, helping parents stay informed about potential fevers with minimal  inconvenience.

What We Learned from a 9-Month FeverDots Stability Study

At FeverDots, we’re always curious about how our product performs over time. As a retired chemist, I’ve spent much of my career solving problems through observation and experimentation, so naturally I wanted to better understand what happens to FeverDots during long-term storage.

Recently, I completed a 11-month study using FeverDots manufactured more than five years ago. The results were encouraging and provided insight into how activation and storage conditions affect performance.

What This Suggests

The most important finding is that cold storage preserved the original color-change temperature for at least a year.

Equally important, previous testing showed that FeverDots stored at room temperature could be restored to their original response simply by warming them to full pink and allowing them to cool.

These observations suggest that the thermochromic system is not degrading. Instead, a reversible physical change appears to occur during room-temperature storage. Warming the product restores the original color-change response.

Interestingly, the same behavior was observed in FeverDots produced more than five years ago, indicating that the underlying thermochromic coating remains functional even after long-term storage.

Why We Recommend Activation and Cold Storage

Based on these findings, FeverDots instructions recommend:

  1. Activate FeverDots upon receipt by warming them until all dots turn pink.
  2. Store activated FeverDots in a refrigerator or freezer until needed.

Our testing shows that activated FeverDots stored cold maintained their intended color-change response for at least nine months, and ongoing studies are now evaluating storage periods of 12 months and beyond.

Founders of Wellhouse Enterprises, Caroline Jurado and Margaret Shaw

About Wellhouse Enterprises

  • Wellhouse Enterprises was founded in March 2020, at the very start of the COVID-19 pandemic. As the world was grappling with how to identify and prevent the spread of illness, we saw a critical need for an easy way to detect fevers early. Margaret, a teacher and author asked, “How can we tell if someone has a fever without using a thermometer over and over again?” Caroline, a product development chemist and program manager responded, “We could use dyes that change color with temperature". The conversation between Margaret and Caroline sparked an idea: a simple, wearable sticker that changes color to signal a fever. FeverDots are now trusted by caregivers, educators, and families as a simple tool for monitoring wellness.

Core Competencies

FeverDots® is an innovative fever-detection product that provides quick, clear, and consistent identification of elevated temperatures without the need for frequent thermometer use. Designed with convenience and care in mind, FeverDots® is ideal for environments where continuous monitoring is crucial, including assisted living facilities, schools, disaster response areas, and homes. Its non-invasive, adhesive dots change color when a fever threshold is detected, streamlining the identification process in a wide range of settings.
